Start by following the basic process for fraction multiplication, turning any mixed fractions into improper ones. Before you cross cancel or multiply, however, swap the numerator and the denominator in the second fraction. This is called taking the reciprocal and it is the key step to turn this into a division operation. Then, cross cancel, multiply across to get the answer fraction, and reduce.
Use mnemonics and silly stories to help you remember. A mnemonic is a special technique or learning device that helps you remember something. Stories like Times Tales can help you memorize your multiplication facts by associating the numbers with silly characters and stories. Phrases like 5 6 7 8, 56 equals 7 times 8 are also useful. There are many ways to memorize things, you just need to find the way that works best for you.
Dividing numbers. After your child grasps the concept of dividing and the relationship with multiplication you can start working with numbers. Be sure your child is familiar with the format and signs for division. With the concept grasped, teaching division will become more about guided practice to help your child to become familiar with the division operation (although it’s really going to be a different type of multiplication practice.) Start by practicing division by 1, 2 and 3 and then gradually move up to 9. Use the worksheets to help.
