What it is about memorizing multiplication tables that make my kids throw their pencil across the room and shout, “I hate math?” It is because, unlike spelling or vocabulary, numbers don’t create pictures for us. Multiplication tables are strings of seemingly random numbers that our children are expected to not only remember, but keep in order and in context with the numbers they are multiplying by.
Another variation is to ask the child to draw. First make some sticks, circles, squares, or other shapes on a page, and encircle them. Make for the child a big "bubble" to draw in, and ask the child to draw either the same amount, one more, or one less. Also have your child practice writing numbers on paper.
We often talk of dividing as being the reverse of multiplying, and indeed when dividing fractions this is the case. The way you divide fractions is very similar to the way fractions are multiplied with a simple twist in the middle.
Children will be learning at school how to round up decimals to the nearest whole number. A fun way to practise this at home is to use regular dominos and establish that each piece is a decimal number (so a domino one with 3 dots and 4 dots is 3.4). Encourage them to play with the dominos, but with the rule that they can only, for example, join 2 dominos that are within 1.5 of each other. This will really get them thinking about what each decimal point represents. A number line can also be useful when rounding decimals.
